The Vocational Pathway (VP) is for our young people with a range of moderate learning difficulties, disabilities and support needs who are developing the skills and knowledge they need to prepare them for their next steps into adult life – be that paid or voluntary work, further education or training, independent or supported living or social care/community programmes.
 
The goal for the Pathway is to prepare each young person for their next step into life beyond Newfriars College and into adulthood. Each young person completes a personalised, varied curriculum offer which is built around the skills, knowledge and experiences each individual young person needs for their future goals and aspirations, that are transferable into adulthood.

Vocational Options

GCSE Art and Design

In GCSE art and design (fine art) students will be covering 4 areas of study -developing ideas from source material, refining ideas, recording ideas and producing a meaningful response which demonstrates an understanding of visual language. To enable students to create and complete both their portfolios of work and their externally set exam piece, the course is broken down into a variety of small and medium sized projects covering a wealth of information whilst giving the students time to practice using different media’s, techniques and looking at existing artists as source material.

Our two-year AQA GCSE Art and Design course is a creative programme where students have the opportunity to develop their creative arts skills.

Learners who are not able to access the full GCSE programme can complete a college Step-Up to Art and Design programme working alongside the GCSE learners but working at their own pace and able to focus on their specific areas of interest,

Conservation

Short explanation of course:

This course introduces students to the principles and practices of wildlife conservation. Designed for beginners, it covers the basics of biodiversity, the importance of wildlife in ecosystems, and the threats they face. Students will learn about different conservation strategies, including habitat preservation, species protection, and sustainable resource management. In this course, our college collaborates with Groundworks at Silverdale Country Park and the RSPB at Consal woods where they participate in hands on conservation, learning how to use a range of tools through activities like coppicing, dry hedge building, wetland restoration, woodland management and dry-stone wall building. Through interactive lessons and field exercises, students will gain a fundamental understanding of how to protect and conserve wildlife for future generations and will play active roles in doing so by working with local and national conservation bodies.

The Trades and Mechanics course is delivered at the college’s brand-new off-site Trades Unit providing a real-life working environment for students to develop and practise skills and embedded employability skills. Students can complete one-, two- or three-year programmes.

Trades and Mechanics

The Trades and Mechanics vocational option introduces learners to practical skills in areas such as construction, mechanics, and manual trades. It is designed to build confidence, independence, and employability through hands-on learning and real-world applications.

ICT Pathway (2-Year Course)
The ICT pathway is structured as a 2-year course, with each year focusing on a distinct, complementary set of skills: Graphic Design (Year 1) and Microsoft Office Skills (Year 2).

1. Course Overview and Aims

  • This 2-year ICT pathway is designed to provide learners with essential skills in both creative design and practical digital literacy.
  • Year 1 focuses on the NCFE Graphic Design qualification (four units), which aims to provide basic graphic design skills and an understanding of the main principles of design.
  • Year 2 focuses on Microsoft Office Skills, specifically Microsoft Excel (Spreadsheets) and Microsoft Word (Word Processing).
  • Core Approach: The qualifications provide a strong foundation for progression into further study and are supplemented by text bespoke project work (posters, social media ads, menus, etc.) for both internal college needs and external community groups.
Health and Social Care (2-year course)

Short explanation of course: The NCFE Health and Social Care courses are designed to support Entry Level 3 and Level 1 learners in developing a practical understanding of the care sector. It offers a hands-on approach to learning, helping learners build confidence while gaining essential skills, knowledge, and awareness of what it means to work in health and social care. Learners will take part in engaging activities such as role-play,group discussions, and simulated care scenarios to explore topics like helping others, keeping people safe, caring for babies and child
development. This qualification provides a strong foundation for further learning or training in health and social care and helps learners take their first steps towards future employment or progression to higher-level courses.

It introduces essential cooking skills and food knowledge, preparing learners for further education, apprenticeships, or careers in the food sector. The course combines practical techniques with theoretical understanding to build confidence and independence in the kitchen.

Horticulture
Short explanation of course:

The Step Up to Practical Horticulture course has been designed to enable learners to experience the world of gardening and horticulture. Sessions are based in the college polytunnel and around the grounds at College. learners also have the opportunity to spend time in the community developing their gardening skills and knowledge by working in community garden spaces.
The sessions are practical and real world where the learners complete a wide range of seasonal gardening jobs to support their learning journey. Sessions are personalised so that learners can focus on particular areas of interest which could lead on to work experience opportunities where possible with a particular focus in certain aspects of gardening.

The course runs for one academic year but it is possible for learners to return for a 2nd year to enhance their knowledge in areas of particular interest within our college horticulture offer.

Community Junction
Short Explanation of Course:
Community Junction is a satellite site offering hands-on experience in a working café, print shop, and community hub. It prepares learners for employment and adulthood by rotating them through various job roles in a real-life setting. This gives leaners a pre supported internship opportunity.
