At Newfriars College, community learning is at the heart of every learner’s journey. In whichever pathway the students are a part of, they are supported to explore, engage with and contribute to their local community in meaningful ways.
As our learners prepare for adulthood or explore employment opportunities, we believe that learning beyond the classroom is essential and often the most effective environment to promote progress, in real-world scenarios and locations.
Real-World Experiences
Across all pathways, students regularly access the local community to build confidence, independence and social skills. From travel training and shopping to visiting libraries, leisure centres and health services, learners are supported to explore and engage with the world around them.
Meaningful Opportunities
- ILP learners take part in community visits linked to health, wellbeing, and independent living. They practise using money, reading signs, and making choices in real-life settings.
- SLP learners experience a wide range of community environments, including sensory gardens, shops, and leisure venues. Activities are tailored to support communication, choice-making and personal development.
- VP learners engage in structured work placements and community projects. These include roles at our award-winning Community Junction café, and UHNM hospital through Project Search.
Building Skills for Life
Community learning helps students:
- Develop confidence in public settings
- Practise communication and social interaction
- Learn how to stay safe and make informed choices
- Contribute positively to their local area
Whether it’s volunteering, travel training, or working in a café, every experience is designed to support students in becoming active, valued members of their community and apply the skills developed during their time at school or on-site at college but in a real world situation.
