Welcome to Supported Living Pathway. The Supported Living Pathway is for our learners with the most complex needs. The pathway prepares each young person for their next step into life beyond Newfriars College and into adulthood.

Each young person has a personalised programme with a focus on developing skills for the future that are transferable into adulthood and into adult social care provision.

Our aim is to support and prepare our young people to live their best possible adult life. Please view our overview SLP below.

Personal Progress

Personal Progress provides a bespoke curriculum for individual learners to support them in achieving their aspirations. It will develop a variety of skills at a level appropriate for each learner. Learners have opportunities to use specialist equipment and access therapies. Personal progress promotes friendships and relationships and equips learners to play an active role in the college community and beyond. The top 10 skills for SLP are covered during all sessions across the SLP curriculum.

Skills for Life

Skills to Life aims to enable learners develop skills that enable them to be active participants in their education and daily lives beyond college. Learners will develop their independence in daily tasks and experience a variety of environments and equipment. Learners will develop their communication skills to give them maximum autonomy over their own lives. They will develop their understanding of how they might like to spend their free time by engaging in activities such as sports, music and dance.

Exploring Community

Exploring the Community will allow learners to discover things about themselves and their community, experience activities that give them opportunities to develop strategies to manage their own needs and feelings and allow them to make decisions about how they spend their time. They will develop an awareness of their environment, college life, how they fit in, how to stay fit and healthy and how to work with others and develop friendships. They will experience key places in the community and develop skills to be able to access, enjoy and contribute to these places.

Gardening

Gardening aims to enable learners to develop their communication and thinking skills whilst improving their physical and mental health through gardening tasks and exploring outdoor environments; essential skills that our learners can develop for life after college. Outdoor activities aims to encourage team-building skills in college and the wider gardening community, through positive interactions with their peers, the college staff and community gardeners.

Creative Learning

Creative Learning enables learners to develop skills to support their individual EHCP outcomes and prepare them for life beyond Newfriars. Creativity provides learners with a vehicle to express their unique personalities and celebrates their choices. Learners will explore different creative processes and artists using different techniques and materials to create unique pieces of art to exhibit and sell as well as participating in the pleasure of the creative process with others. The enterprise aspect will provide learners with a sense of purpose and achievement and enable them to contribute towards their pathway and beyond.

Healthy Living

Swimming is an important and popular component of the timetable for SLP learners. They will gain confidence and independence in the water, develop their self-help skills and develop or maintain their fitness and / or mobility. For many of our learners being in the pool is their opportunity to experience freedom and independent movement. We work in conjunction with physiotherapists to deliver hydrotherapy and stretches. It is also an opportunity for learners to have fun with others and gain experience of swimming as a leisure activity.
